Episode 245: My #1 Tip for Healthy Travel (Sans Deprivation)

I just came back from a 7-day cruise and on the last night my friend Jose asked how disciplined I felt like I was during the trip. 

I said, “I don’t know that ‘disciplined’ is the right word.” Discipline in this context implies willpower, sacrifice, and strict rules. That really doesn’t describe my experience on board. 

The right word? Mindful. Here’s how this looked in practice…

Mindful of my hunger and satiety cues.

With lots of all-you-can-eat buffets it would be easy to go overboard (pun intended). So I regularly asked myself if I was actually hungry before eating, and checked in with my body throughout each meal which regularly led to food being left on my plate. 

Mindful of choices.

While I definitely enjoyed more treat foods than usual - think tater tots and bacon with breakfast and gluten/dairy free desserts most nights - I also was always looking for fruit, veggies, and healthy protein like roasted chicken and smoked salmon to add to my plate. This helped me not over-do it with the less-healthy fare. 

Mindful drinking.

I was really on top of only drinking when it would truly add to my experience (which was less often than you’d think), as opposed to taking everyone else’s lead. I also kept it to no more than 2 drinks at a time. Even though there were times I was tempted to keep the party going, I reminded myself how shitty I would feel after. 

Mindful movement.

I kept up my routine of morning walks and daily workouts. Not to punish myself for any food choices but because 1) It was a form of entertainment/alone-time when there wasn’t a lot going on on the boat 2) it helped keep my digestion regular 3) I really like to stay anchored in at least one consistent healthy habit while traveling. It makes it a lot easier to get back into the swing of things when I get home.

Mindful of my needs. 

7 days is a long time to spend with the same group of people no matter how much you love them. Whereas past Kat would follow her friends around like a puppy dog not wanting to miss out on anything (hello FOMO) even if she was socially taxed, today's Kat spent a lot of time alone with a book and a journal in the thermal spa. There was even one night where I skipped a show we had planned to see because I needed a good night's sleep. 

With all of this said, I'm definitely not always perfect at staying mindful while on vacation. And I - like everyone - have certainly overindulged during various past trips. Which is why inside The Club I'll be sharing exactly what supplements I would take, what workouts I would do, and what foods I would eat after too much alcohol, too many carbs, or too much sugar.
