Do you ever find yourself thinking about how different your life would look had you started working on your dreams when you first conceived of them?
What would have happened if you had started that food blog when you first began experimenting with paleo recipes 3 years ago? Could that have turned into a career? A book? Or maybe even just a little extra pocket change for that trip to Florida you've been salivating over?
How would your life have changed had you started working out back when you first noticed the pounds creeping on? Would you have the body you want? Would you feel more confident and therefore ask for the raise, or go on more dates, or go on that Florida trip you've been salivating over? (Ok, I might be jonesing to go to Florida, but the scenario still plays.)
The point is, how much time have you wasted NOT loving your body, NOT enjoying your job, and NOT living the life you want because you just keep putting off what you know you need to do to get there?
My guess is... a lot more than you would like to admit. Which is why I want to share with you how to get out of your head and get into the deep work of pursuing your biggest, scariest goals.
Because you procrastinating isn't only robbing you of precious time, energy, and joy... it's robbing the world of your light, your purpose, and the gifts and talents you have to bring to the table.
Maybe that feels grandiose to say, but even on a small scale. What happens when you put off those big goals you have for yourself? You probably feel lazy, like a failure, broken, unmotivated, maybe even depressed or anxious.
Do you not think those feelings you're experiencing are infecting every other area of your life and impacting the people in your circle? They are.
I recently chatted with a young woman who, even though she's financially successful, even though she has a strong support system, even though she has what many people would consider "all you could ask for," she knew she wasn't going after what she really wanted.
And the way she said she felt floored me, she said, "The longer I go without pursuing these goals, the more I feel like I'm just... disintegrating."
See, as you procrastinate, you don't just stay in the same place. You aren't just a statue at the starting line.
With each passing day, you'll get more discouraged, you'll feel more overwhelmed, you'll feel like you're falling further and further behind and only one of two things will happen.
Either you'll give up on the dream altogether because it's just slipped too far out of your fingers. Or one day, the discomfort of you living as you are will get so strong that you'll have no choice but to act.
And you know, if you're in my tribe... quitting is not an option. So let's skip ahead to the changing your life part, here's what you've got to do.
If you’re the person who says, “I need to find the perfect workout plan to start training” or “I need my website to be perfect before I launch my business” you've got to acknowledge, here and now, that perfectionism is just another form of procrastination.
You don’t become an artist by planning your masterpiece and creating the perfect lighting, and buying the best paints and tools. You become an artist by putting paintbrush to canvas. Period.
The rest of it will come in time. But you have to be willing to suck, you have to be willing to suck for a while if you're going to reach for anything resembling perfection.
Chances are good, part of the reason you're procrastinating is you feel overwhelmed. Am I right?
Break those big, scary goals into daily, action steps that are as simple and easy as you can possibly make them.
For example, when I had to write the 3 month curriculum for my Unleash Your Bad Ass Entrepreneur program, I really wanted to put it off because it just felt like such a beast to accomplish.
So I scaled it down. One week I broke the curriculum down into modules. The next week I focused on outlining the modules. Then each week after that I would only make myself responsible for filling in the outline of a single lesson. Once those were all complete I cleaned everything up and made it presentable. And finally I posted the link to apply for it on my website.
In other words, how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
This one I stole from the brilliant Brendon Burchard. Think about something you automatically do every single day no matter what.
Then, commit to yourself that you won’t do that thing until you’ve completed the task that you normally would procrastinate.
For example, I won’t eat dinner until I write 5 pages of my manuscript. Or I won’t take a shower until I sweat for 20 minutes in the gym.
This is the most sure fire way of keeping you on track.
I spent 2 years trying to grow my online business on my own. I spent money on books, spent hours trial and erroring myself to death, and made all of zero sales.
Then I finally bit the bullet and invested in a business coach. I made 5 figures in the first month of working with him.
So learn from my mistake and stop waisting more of your precious time.
Consistently put these 4 practices into place over the next year, and instead of looking at your life and thinking "what if" or "what could have been"... you're going to be amazed at what you've accomplished, who you've become, and how drastically life has improved in such a short period of time.
You have what it takes, you just have to get out of your own way to finally get there.
Now maybe you've read through all of this and you feel like you know all these things you should be doing to get over your procrastination, but you just can't seem to get the ball rolling on any of it.
